The use of hydrotropes by the chemical formulator has become an integral part of developing highly alkaline or acidic products. The function of a hydrotrope in these systems is to stabilize other surfactants in order to allow them to remain soluble. This is especially true in the case of some nonionics which have limited acid and alkaline stability. In most cases, hydrotropes that have previously been used did not contribute any additional properties to the performance of the final product. This resulted in higher cost formulations with little or no additional benefits. DeFOREST realizes the limitations of several hydrotropes which are currently available to the industry. We have had an interest in developing hydrotropes that also offer additional properties to the formulator.
DeTROPE SA-45
DeTROPE SA-45 is a very low foaming 45% active sodium salt of a modified carboxcylic acid. It is recommended as a hydrotrope for use in highly alkaline systems where low foam is desirable. DeTROPE SA-45 is chlorine stable, contributes to wetting properties, is non-phenolic and readily biodegradable. It is not recommended for use in acid systems.
DeTROPE CA-100
This unique hydrotrope is a 100% active modified carboxylate. It is primarily suggested for use in strong alkaline systems in both liquid and powdered formulations. In addition to hydrotroping, DeTROPE CA-100 is an excellent wetting agent and corrosion inhibitor. This hydrotrope is recommended for use in alkaline systems where a high cloud point and low to moderate quick breaking foam is required. The outstanding performance of this product permits the use of low concentrations in order to achieve desired properties in most formulations. DeTROPE CA-100 is hard water stable, non-phenolic and readily biodegradable. It is not recommended for use in acid systems.
DePHOTROPE CAS-MF
A versatile surfactant classified as a 50% active organo phosphate amphoteric. It has outstanding stability in highly alkaline and acid systems. It is an excellent low to moderate foaming hydrotrope for nonionics and anionics in products containing high electrolyte content. DePHOTROPE CAS-MF has very good detergency and wetting properties and is hard water stable and biodegradable.
DePHOTROPE LFW-98
A low foaming modified phosphate ester in the free acid form. It has excellent hydrotroping and wetting properties for use in strong alkaline and acid formulations. It is also recommended for use as a water soluble lubricant.
DePHOS H-66-872
Throughout the past several years, the chemical equivalent to DePHOS H-66-872 has been recognized by industry as the standard for all hydrotropes. DePHOS H-66-872 has exceptional hydrotroping properties in both alkaline and acid systems. It is chemically described as a 50% active potassium salt of an aromatic phosphate ester. When compared to a similar product currently in the marketplace, DePHOS H-66-872 has lower foaming properties and reduced odor. In some alkaline and acid applications, increased hydrotroping properties have been observed.
In addition to the above products, there are other surfactants in the DeFOREST product line which will also act as hydrotropes in both alkaline and acid systems. These products include phosphate esters (DePHOS series) and amphoterics (DeTERIC series). For additional information, we suggest you e-mail us with your inquiry in order that we may recommend the appropriate hydrotrope for your application.
